Ethical Values for Students
“A value is an enduring belief that a specific mode of conduct or end state of existence is personally or socially preferable to an opposite or converse mode of conduct or end state of existence.” The country has progressed economically and major steps have been taken to enhance education standards but somewhere along the way, we seem to have lost sight of our traditional values. The time has come when we must start moulding the character of students to become good citizens our institution recognizes and instills the following moral values and ethics in the students:
Love is the greatest virtue. Love should be unconditional. With more love in the world, kindness will follow and replace cruelty.
Students must be taught that dishonesty and cheating are wrong, and will get them nowhere in the future. As a student, one is only hurting himself or herself by cheating, because this action will eventually catch in the end with bad consequences.
Success is only one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration. Thus, hard work is the key to success.
Respect for others should include respecting different religions, races, sexes, ideas, and life styles.
To achieve a common goal, it is necessary for all people to work together. If this is not done, a few people may profit, but the end result for everyone will be a failure. Thus, “united we stand and divided we fall.”
Compassion is defined as being sensitive to the needs of people. If the youth would be compassionate enough, there would be less poverty, hunger, wars, and unhappiness.
Our scriptures have taught us to forgive our enemies or people who hurt us. Anger in most cases is caused by unwillingness to forgive. There would be less violence and fighting in the institution if students could learn this moral virtue.
We as teachers give our political mandate to promote learning, development and growth of all the pupils. Our values, attitudes and actions influence the impact of our work. These ethical principles constitute a common ground for the development of our ethical awareness. It is our responsibility to act in accordance with these values and principles.
Our responsibility is to build a relationship of trust with those we work for and with. Our loyalty rests with the youth and the pupils, to promote what is in their best interest. Truthful communication of knowledge and high quality pedagogical facilitation is essential.
All teachers and administrators of Higher Educational institutions:
We are knowledgeable and responsible. As a professional community we have a common responsibility to develop good education and to promote and develop our professionalism.
